John Bedenbender grew up on a small farm in Kansas. He was able to attend JBU only because he received work-study and Presidential scholarships. After receiving a BSME degree from JBU in 1962, he obtained MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering at UT Austin. He began his career in mechanical engineering at Texas Instruments in 1967 working on geophysical exploration methods and equipment, obtaining a number of patents. In 1981, John and three partners started Heaviquip Engineering and Manufacturing where he designed servohydraulic vibrators used in geophysical exploration.
