Technology FAQs

What type of computer will I need to bring to campus?

You may want to wait to decide what kind of computer to buy until you have been on campus for a little while. The answer may vary depending on your major. If you are in a major that uses computers a lot, you may want to speak to your instructors to see if they recommend a certain type of computer.

What can I do if I don't want to purchase my own computer?

JBU has computer labs across campus and in residence halls for student use. We have specialized labs in many academic program areas, fully equipped with the latest design software for projects. These labs have printers that easily allow students to print from their student print account. Students may also use computers in the JBU Library for individual work and study.

Do I need to bring a printer?

No, the computer labs, residence hall labs, Media Lab, and many common areas around campus are equipped with printers and copiers for your use. Please do not bring wireless printers, as they will interfere with the campus Wi-Fi network.

How do I get connected to the Internet?

JBU provides wireless internet access in all residence halls and buildings across campus.

Can I set up a wireless router/access point?

No. Please leave wireless access points at home. We provide wireless access in the residence halls and across campus. Separate routers/access points can interfere with the JBU network.

What about security for my personal computer?

JBU utilizes an enterprise firewall that provides security for the campus network. There is little we can do to protect your computer from malware that is introduced through personal storage or local residents. We encourage you to enable the firewall that comes with your computer’s operating system.

It is also highly recommended that you install up-to-date antivirus software. For Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers, it is already on your machine in the form of Windows Defender. There are also many free, basic options available for download for Macs. If you have questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk.

What do I need to know about online safety?

Phishing is an email attempt to gain personal information such as usernames, passwords, and other sensitive information by pretending to be a credible source like a bank or an IT department. While our spam filter catches most of such messages, they sometimes get through. Here's how to protect yourself:

NEVER give out your password or other personal information over email or phone, not even to an IT person. Our ITS department will never ask for this information.

FORWARD the email to the JBU Help Desk if you are not sure.

DELETE emails that look suspicious.

For additional information about safe computing practices, please see our online safety page.

Where do I go for technology help?

The ITS Help Desk, located in the Learning Resource Center next to the JBU Library, can help you with all of your technology needs.

Blackboard
The Learning Management System (LMS) at JBU. Many instructors will leverage Blackboard to publish course information, assignments, scores, and act as a submission point for work. It is used as the primary learning environment for online classes and as a resource supplement for in-person classes.

Computer Labs
Several academic programs have computer labs implemented for instruction, specialized software use, and collaborative projects, including: Chemistry, Computer Science, Construction Management, Data & Analytics, Engineering, and Visual Arts.

Wi-Fi
Wireless networking is available throughout campus, including residence hall, study, and collaboration spaces.
