Weather Policy

Because JBU is traditionally a residential campus, classes rarely close due to inclement weather, even on days when local schools may be closed. However, in extreme cases weather conditions may prevent professors from traveling to campus.  Professors should also make reasonable accommodations for students who may have difficulty commuting from off-campus locations. If you think weather may prevent you from attending a class, be sure to contact your professor as soon as possible.

Chapel Policy

Attendance Requirement

Chapel is an essential part of fulfilling John Brown University’s mission of providing Christ-centered higher education to our students. Therefore, attendance is mandatory.

  • All full-time students (12 hours or more) and residential (on-campus) students are required to attend a minimum of 21 chapels per semester.
  • At least 15 of those must be weekday “regular” chapels (generally Tuesdays and Thursdays). The remaining six (6) requirements may be any combination of regular chapels and/or services that are designated as “additional” chapel events, such as The Gathering (Sunday night student-led chapel) and other forums approved by the Office of Christian Formation.
  • Part-time students (11 or fewer hours) do not have a chapel requirement except that they are required to make up any chapel requirements which were unmet the prior semester.

Students who have extreme circumstances and feel they will be unable to attend chapel as required may apply for an exemption.  Applications are due in the Office of Christian Formation during the first week of classes, and eligibility for exemption will be determined by the Chapel Exemption Committee.

Campus Safety

JBU’s Campus Safety, also known as Campo, provides many services for students. They will help you jumpstart your car, walk you between buildings or to your car late at night, and so much more. They also run the campus Lost & Found, so if you are missing anything-check out the Campus Safety webpage.

Commuter Meal Options

You can bring your lunch to campus, store it in the Commuter Lounge Fridge/Freezer and eat your lunch in the lounge, student center, around campus and even in the Kresge Dining Hall (just check in at the front desk with your ID and you can eat the lunch you brought with friends).

There are many off-campus dining options within walking and short driving distance.

On-campus you can enjoy all-you-can-eat meals in the Kresge Dining Hall (AKA “the Caf”) or snack and grill options in the California Café. In both these locations you can pay with cash or card, or you can opt to get an on-campus meal plan. Because the dining needs of commuters are different, there are meal plan options created specifically for commuters.

Meal Plans

Plan I - Offers 25 Dining Hall scans per semester, plus $105 Declining Balance Dollars*.

Plan II - Offers 50 Dining Hall scans per semester, plus $175 Declining Balance Dollars*.

Plan III – Offers 75 Dining Hall scans per semester, 75 snack scans at California Café per semester, plus $150 Declining Balance Dollars*.

* Declining Balance Dollars may only be used in the California Café

Check out our Dining Services plans online for more information and additional meal plan options.

Great Places to Eat on Campus

The Quad – When the weather is especially nice, enjoy a picnic-style lunch on the Quad. Enjoy your meal under a tree, on a nice piece of lawn, on one of the many park benches, or at the picnic table.

The Walker Student Center Balcony – Get a new perspective on life as you enjoy your meal outside on the second-floor balcony of WSC. The balcony is covered so rain, shine, or even snow the balcony and its many tables are ready for you to enjoy.

The LRC Lobby – When the weather may not be as hospitable try the LRC Lobby, located directly outside the library. The lobby has a number of tables, chairs, and couches as well as some vending machines if your lunch needs a little something extra.
