Animals on Campus

General Policy

John Brown University is responsible for assuring the health and safety of all employees. In keeping with this objective, JBU does not permit employees to bring their household pets to work.  Animals may pose a threat of infection and may cause allergic reactions in other employees. Some employees may feel threatened or be distracted by the presence of animals, particularly dogs. In addition, JBU wishes to prevent pets from fouling the office space or damaging company property.

An employee who requires the help of a service animal (defined by 28 CFR 36.104 https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-28/chapter-I/part-36 as “any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability”) will be permitted to bring a service animal to the office, provided the animal’s presence does not create a danger to others and does not impose an undue hardship upon the company.  An employee requiring the use of a service animal should contact Human Resources for permission before bringing a service animal to the office.

JBU shall not be liable for loss of, or injury to, any animal brought to the office.

Residence Hall Policy

Experience has shown that pets can create an uncomfortable, inconvenient, and unhealthy environment in a close-quartered community. Therefore, keeping pets in the residence halls, townhouses, and apartments is prohibited. Fish (e.g. goldfish) are the only exception. A $25/day fine is assessed for having any other type of pet in your room. For more information on university policies regarding service animals and emotional support animals, contact the Office of Disability Services.
