Housing Policy
General Policy
JBU reserves its university-owned housing for faculty, staff and students who are university members and their dependents. JBU provides housing to JBU faculty, staff and students in accordance with its deeply held Christian convictions, which include that marriage is a covenantal relationship between one man and one woman, that intimate sexual relationships are reserved for man and woman in marriage, that the Christian principles of modesty and celibacy for single people are best encouraged through organizing its different housing units as exclusively male or female, and that Christians should seek to live with integrity and congruence between their gender identity and their birth sex. Accordingly, JBU reserves its right to lease its housing only to people who agree to live by these Christian convictions. JBU also believes, according to its Christian convictions, that sin affects all areas of life, so in any housing decision, JBU seeks to reflect both God’s redemptive grace and God’s truth about how we should live. Accordingly, JBU will treat each situation in which a resident may not be living by these Christian convictions on a case-by-case basis considering all of the facts and circumstances of the situation. JBU encourages faculty, staff and students who would like to live in university housing but may have difficulty with this provision or have questions about it to notify JBU’s residence life office to discuss their concerns and possible accommodations, if any.
Undergraduate Off-Campus Policy
Research supports our belief that the residence life experience is vital to the student’s development as a whole person (head, heart, hand). Therefore, all unmarried traditional undergraduate students enrolled for twelve (12) or more hours of academic credit must live in on-campus university housing.
Those 22 years old before the beginning of the semester in which they would live off-campus are eligible to do so without application.
Traditional undergraduate students who are not yet 22 and wish to move off-campus must complete an application process and receive approval from the Student Development office. Students who wish to live with a parent or an approved relative (i.e. grandparents, aunt & uncle) do not need to complete this process but must complete the Commuter Notification Form and inform the Director of Residence Life.
Only qualified students should apply to live off-campus. Qualifications are:
- Cumulative GPA is 2.5 or better
- Student has lived in on-campus housing for six semesters.
- Senior transfer students who have lived on campus at another institution and in JBU housing for at least two semesters.
- Clearance from the Financial Aid Office
- A clean current disciplinary record
