Alcohol, Drugs & Narcotics

Alcohol

Alcoholic beverages (including non-alcoholic beer and alcohol powder) are not to be used or possessed either on- or off-campus, or at any time while enrolled at JBU. A policy exemption application is available for qualified students who are 26 years of age or older. Please contact the Office of Student Development to complete the exemption request.

Drugs & Narcotics

Narcotics and/or any and all controlled substances producing altered states of consciousness, such as cocaine, amphetamines, heroin, marijuana, any hallucinogenic drugs, or any drug paraphernalia, are not to be used or possessed. Exceptions are medications currently prescribed by a physician.

Students are prohibited from using prescription drugs that are not prescribed for them.

Medical Marijuana & CBD

Medical Marijuana: JBU is committed to remaining in compliance with the federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989, along with any applicable state laws and regulations regarding the use of marijuana. Marijuana, in any form, including medical marijuana or synthetic (i.e., K2 or Spice or any synthetic product which, when consumed, mimics the effects of marijuana and elicits a feeling of being “buzzed,” high or intoxicated), shall not be possessed, sold, bought or used by JBU students on or off the university campus. Students requesting an exception to this policy must seek approval from the Vice President for Student Development.

CBD Oil derived from marijuana or with a THC content greater than 0.3% is not permitted on JBU’s campus in any form. Medically recommended, hemp-based CBD lotions or oils that are administered topically (not smoked or vaped) are allowed, provided they contain 0.3% or less THC, and the student retains the original packaging showing the THC content.

Drug Testing

John Brown University reserves the right to administer breathalyzer tests or require drug testing for any student when reasonable suspicion exists that a student may have violated the Community Covenant/Student Handbook Policies. Reasonable suspicion for testing is determined at the sole discretion of University officials. For student-athletes, all NAIA drug testing policies and University policies apply.

Students with positive test results will be responsible for all testing fees and will be entered into the Student Development Disciplinary Process. While students have the right to refuse a breathalyzer or drug test, students who do not take and/or fully cooperate with requested tests will be treated as positive results.
