JBU Wins 7th SAC Game

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 2, 2004) - Combining a good defensive effort with outside shooting, John Brown University captured their seventh Sooner Athletic Conference win of the season on Thursday defeating Oklahoma Baptist University 62-49. The Golden Eagle defense held the Bison to 33% from the field allowing the Bison to shoot only 15.4% from the 3-point arc. On the other end of the floor, JBU hit 7 of 16 from the 3 point range and shot 40.4% overall as they took their second victory from OBU this season.

The Golden Eagles took a 31-25 lead into the locker room and were able to open an 18-point lead midway through the second half on the shooting of Kendra McCormick, Alicia Baer, and Lesli Fanning.

Ashley Wettengel and McCormick led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 14 and 13 points respectively. Wettengel also pulled down 8 rebounds in the winning effort. Jadrea Seeley led OBU with 13 points.

“I felt that we played a good game overall,” commented Coach Jeff Soderquist after the win. “I was a bit surprised to see our girls so energized after having played three games in the past five days. OBU is a dangerous team, but have struggled so far during conference play. Holding Jadrea Seeley, the NAIA player of the year in 2002, to only two points in the second half was an example of our tough team defense tonight. We now must prepare for Oklahoma City on Thursday night. Our goal is to give them a different game than in our first meeting.”

JBU goes to 18-5 for the season and 7-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The seven wins mark a new school record for SAC wins in a season for the Golden Eagles. Thursday night’s game at No. 2 Oklahoma City University begins at 6:00 pm.
