John Brown University SIFE Earns Regional Championship

Siloam Springs, Ark (April 10, 2002) - The John Brown University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team was named Regional Champion at the regional SIFE competition in Memphis last week. JBU SIFE defeated 25 competing teams in the two-day regional competition in Memphis to take home the top honors.

Dr. Joe Walenciak, JBU SIFE sponsor and Walton Fellow, said “At this competition, JBU SIFE stood for ‘JBU Students in Flawless Execution.’ I was extremely proud of our students and how they represented John Brown University.” Walenciak went on to say that, “Throughout this whole experience, it was evident that we had an exceptional group of gifted students.”

The JBU SIFE team will compete in the national competition in Kansas City in May with 15 other SIFE chapters from across the country. If they place, JBU will have a chance to win up to $3,000 in prize money.

In addition to the regional competition, JBU SIFE has also entered three corporate-sponsored competitions, including ‘Responsible Use of Credit Week,’ ‘Make a Difference Week,’ and ‘National Teach a Child About Business Week.’ For each competition, the national SIFE organization specifies a time period, and individual SIFE chapters across the country sponsor an event to coordinate with the competition. Then, each chapter sends a report to the national SIFE organization to be judged.

JBU was honored in the ‘National Teach a Child About Business Week’ by earning a national finalist bid for their ‘World Trade Expo’ program. The JBU team was named one of 15 national finalists in the competition, and the top three finalists will be named at the national SIFE competition in Kansas City. The team won a trophy and a $500 prize for receiving the national finalist honor.

John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of over 1,600 students from 45 states and 33 countries. JBU is a member of the Arkansas Independent Colleges and Universities as well as the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
