Beschta announces hurricane relief effort exhibition on Saturday
John Brown University head men's basketball coach Jason Beschta announced this morning the scheduling of an exhibition matchup at Arkansas - Ft. Smith, as the squads will play on Saturday (Oct. 28) at 3 p.m. at the Stubblefield Center with a profound purpose in mind.
Beyond preparing the squad for the World-Famous Toilet Paper Game on Nov. 4, the Golden Eagles and Lions will be playing to raise money for the nation-wide hurricane relief efforts, specifically the One America Appeal.
Admission to the exhibition game will be free, but donations will be accepted at the door. The matchup has been coined "Ballin' for a Benefit."
"We're excited that the NAIA and the NCAA have agreed to allow us this exhibition game with the purpose of supporting the hurricane relief efforts," admitted Beschta. "Having two guys on our team from the Houston area really made everything hit home for us as we saw pictures and videos and heard about the incredible devastation the hurricanes left in their wake.
"Darrell's (Jones) family is from Port Arthur, where they were hit not once, but twice. It's hard to fully grasp what our players and their families and so many other people are going through as a result. While it's difficult to imagine what they're feeling and the long road ahead of them to get things back to a new normal, we're thankful for the opportunity to come together and show our love and support for them."
The Lions enter the contest having just been picked the favorites to win the Heartland Conference, while the Golden Eagles were selected to finish seventh in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
