Cameron Named Freshman of the Year, Barker and Powell Round Out Conference Honors

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Freshman Baily Cameron received the Sooner Athletics top honor awarded to a freshman player while senior Brooke Barker and junior Kodee Powell each landed All-Conference honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday (March 1) morning.

Cameron, who was also named to the first team listing, joins just two other players in program history who earned the distinction of Freshman of the Year, including Kendra McCormick (2002) and Ashley Wettengel (2003). In conference play, the freshman scored 238 points, averaging 13.2 points per game, and grabbed 142 rebounds to finish with a 7.9 average. Pulling down three double-doubles in SAC play, Cameron hit double-digit scoring in 11 of 18 games and topped 20 points on three occasions, including twice in her final six conference outings, and finished second in the league in field goal percentage (51.6 percent).

In what seems to be a promising career as a Golden Eagle, Camerons pair of Freshmen of the Year predecessors each finished in the programs top 10 scoring list. McCormick scored 399 points her first year while Wettengel netted 362. Cameron has 380 this season with at least one more game to play. She finished the regular season leading JBU in scoring (13.1), rebounding (7.2), rejections (17) and field goal percentage (53.5 percent), but also finished second on the squad in three-point shooting (40.5 percent).

“Baily has done an outstanding job this year coming in as a freshman,” said head coach Jeff Soderquist. “It is a well-deserved honor. The great thing about that award is you get to have the player for three more years.”

Barker was named to the third team after finishing second on the team in scoring (12.6 points per game) and second in shooting percentage (45.8). It was the second conference accolade for Barker, who was named honorable mention last season. Barker scored in double figures in half of her conference games played and dished out a total of 44 assists in SAC action, sporting an impressive 1.38 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Barker, who will finish third in program history with an 81.5 percent efficiency from the line, will set a new program record on Thursday when she plays in her 128th collegiate game, breaking a five-way tie, most recently by Morgan Ankrom, who graduated last season.

“Brooke has been such a steady player for us these last four years,” added Soderquist “She has had a great senior year and really finishing up her career strong. Brooke has been a great leader of our program.”

Powell, in her first year with the program, landed honorable mention honors, and finished tied for third in team scoring (10.3 points per game) while drilling a team-best 71 treys on the season. Her 125 assists, which is also fifth-most all-time in single-season program history, leads the team and ranks No. 12 nationally, and tops all teams during conference play with 4.4 assists per night. Powell also finishes the regular season at No. 15 nationwide in three-pointers made, finishing tied for fifth in league play with 44 makes from downtown in SAC action.

“Kodee has come in and played the most minutes on the team and has done a great job leading from that position,” Soderquist noted. “Sometimes she is a one-man press-breaker, and thats huge for us.”

John Brown is the No. 4 seed for the upcoming Sooner Athletic Tournament after tying for fourth place with a 10-8 record. The Golden Eagles will face No. 4 Southwestern A.G. (Texas) on Thursday (March 3) in the quarterfinals at the Shaffer Center in Waxahachie, Texas. Tip is set for 2:15 p.m.
