Deines’ season-best propels Golden Eagles past Lynx
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Junior Kimmy Deines netted a season-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor and the John Brown University women's basketball team caused 19 Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) turnovers to complete a third-quarter comeback in a 77-70 win on Friday (Nov. 11) evening inside Bill George Arena.
Down four early in the third quarter, a balanced offensive attack led by five points from junior Rosa Orpo helped swing the score nine point in favor of the Golden Eagles (3-0), 56-52.
Redshirt freshman Jordan Martin's triple at the 6:39 mark of the fourth quarter ballooned JBU's lead to a game-high 10, 64-54, finish off a 6-3 JBU run.
A late Lynx (2-1) surge cut the hosts' lead to four, 68-64, but a Baily Cameron triple on the next trip down the floor extinguished any Lindenwood hope of mounting a late comeback. Looking to maximize its number of chances of whittling the Golden Eagle lead in the final minute, LUB began fouling, until both Deines and senior Kodee Powell each converted a pair of attempts from the line to seal the victory.
Both teams shot over 40 percent from the field, but JBU knocked down 8-of-31 attempts from behind the arc (38.1 percent), and hit the line to the tune of 11-of-12 (91.7 percent), while the hosts only attempted eight in the contest. The Golden Eagles combated a 43-31 rebounding deficit by forcing 19 Lynx turnovers while only committing 13 of its own.
Powell finished the contest with 13 points and a game-best five assists while sophomore Preslea Reece continued her streak with a 13-point evening. Junior Jana Schammel added nine points and pulled down seven boards in the victory.
Alison Webb paced the Lynx with a double-double, pouring in 16 points and grabbing 11 boards. Brianna Mueller scored 13 points, hitting only 1-of-7 from long range, while Torre Kohrmann finished with eight points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 12) to face rival College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in a 3 p.m. matinee clash.
