Golden Eagles drop four-set decision to St. Gregory’s

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Ashlyn Broussard struck for 22 kills, powering St. Gregory's (Okla.) its first win in 15 years over the John Brown University volleyball team in four sets (25-16, 22-25, 23-25, 17-25) on Saturday (Oct. 8) morning inside Bill George Arena.

The Golden Eagles (14-9, 5-5 SAC) jumped out to a strong start behind a .483 percent hitting performance in the first stanza, blowing open a 15-13 score into a 22-14 lead after a 6-1 rally fueled by kills from freshmen Jessica Meyer and Lindsey Davis. The Cavaliers would only come within six, 22-16, before JBU closed out the first set with three straight points.

Unfortunately for the hosts, SGU (17-8, 8-2 SAC) made adjustments and limited the Golden Eagles to a .116 mark through the final three sets, claiming its 10th-consecutive victory of the season.

Broussard's 22 kills powered the Cavalier offense while Gabby Ware chipped in 11 kills and 30 digs. Broussard also scooped 14 to earn the double-double. Sarah Ahrens passed out a career-high 45 assists and added 15 digs for the Cav's third double-double performance.

Freshman Carly McKinney notched her own double-double with 17 kills and 13 digs while freshmen Jessica Meyer added 11 kills and Megan Beck each earned a career-best 15 terminations. Meyer hit a team-best .381 percent and also threw up a pair of solo blocks in the loss.

Junior Alyssa Arnold's 31 assists finished just shy of tying a season best while freshman Elizabeth Williams added 20 assists. Junior Beth Brankle dug a team-best 21.

The Golden Eagles return to the court on Wednesday (Oct. 12) to host Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 7 p.m. The Pioneers won the first meeting of the series in Plainview, Texas in sweeping fashion.
