Gonzalez Tabbed as Initial Men's Soccer Player of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (September 2, 2013) -- John Brown’s Martin Gonzalez and Oklahoma City’s Joe Shulberg have been named the Sooner Athletic Conference men’s soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for Aug. 26-Sept. 1, conference officials announced today.

Gonzalez, a junior midfielder from Houston, Texas, paced the Golden Eagles to two victories this past weekend as he notched the game-tying goal against Northwestern (Iowa) and landed a two-goal game against Dordt (Iowa) where he gave John Brown an early lead before scoring the game-winner later in the match.

John Brown defeated the Red Raiders and the Defenders, 2-1 and 5-1, respectively, en route to a 2-0 weekend after falling to No. 14 Oklahoma Wesleyan, 5-2, earlier in the week.

"Martin had a solid tournament for us in Iowa," said head coach Scott Marksberry. "We are still figuring out how to best deploy him in our system, so I don't think we got him as many touches as we would like. He did, however, make the most of his chances.

"On the season, he has put every one of his seven shots on target, which shows that he has not been forcing his chances. The fact that all three of his goals this weekend were assisted shows that our team is moving the ball around in the attacking third. As our team continues to play disciplined and unselfish soccer, our guys will continue to have opportunities for individual honors."

Shulberg, a senior goalkeeper from Huntingdon, England, posted 11 saves in a 1-1 week for Oklahoma City. He had six saves in a 3-2 win at Baker (Kan.) and five more blocks in a 1-0 loss at No. 17 Benedictine (Kan.).
