J.C. Carter Chosen to Complete Men's Basketball Staff
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (April 29, 2013) - J.C. Carter has been selected as the next assistant men's basketball coach at John Brown University, Director of Athletics Robyn Daugherty announced Monday morning.
“J.C. is a great addition to our staff," Daugherty said. "His prior experience as both a head coach and an assistant coach will be a tremendous asset to the program. Men's basketball has seen continued success over the years and bringing on J.C. confirms our desire is to continue on that path.”
Carter's hiring fills a vacancy that appeared on head coach Clark Sheehy's staff earlier this month when six-year assistant coach Aaron Niven was offered the head coaching job at Spring Hill (Ala.). Despite the recent turnover, Sheehy is confident Carter can step in and have an immediate impact.
"We are very excited to add J.C. to our program," noted Sheehy. "He brings great experience and enthusiasm to the Golden Eagle family. He is a great addition to our department and his experiences at different levels of the game will be a great asset for the program."
Carter's career included three stops over four seasons, which began at Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, where he spent one season in NJCAA competition prior to transferring to NCAA I Stephen F. Austin State for his sophomore campaign. Finally, in 2000, Carter settled in for his last two years at NCAA II Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo., where he earned the Greg Germany 2002 Senior Leadership Award for his efforts with the men's basketball team.
After his collegiate playing days were through, Carter went to work as Director of Basketball Operations at NCAA I Texas - Pan American. After one year in Edinburg, Texas, Carter moved to Los Angeles and accepted the head coaching position at Village Christian High School for two seasons.
Carter then quickly jumped the ranks when he was offered an assistant coaching position at NCAA I California State - Northridge in 2006 where he coordinated recruiting efforts, team travel and opponent scouting reports.
After a single season, Carter returned to his alma mater for an assistant position on the men's squad in 2007 and quickly helped lead the program to a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship. He then assumed his first head coaching role in the collegiate ranks, taking over the women's team at SBU for three seasons. Carter's squads were known for their three-point prowess, as the Lady Bearcats were featured at second in the nation in triples made.
In 2011, Carter took a 51-mile trek southeast to become the most recent head coach at Marshfield High School, helping the boy's team to back-to-back conference championships. In his first season, Carter was named the Central Ozark Conference Coach of the Year as his team made a season-long appearance in the top-10 of Missouri's Class 4A.
"I consider it an honor and a phenomenal opportunity to be able to work at a University where spiritual influence is the main priority, academic standards are held at a high level, and the basketball team is highly-ranked, experiencing great success," admitted Carter. "Coach Sheehy has continued to be a proven winner, and I’m looking forward to not only working for him, but also learning from him. There is not a higher character coach in the business."
Carter earned his undergraduate degree from Southwest Baptist in 2002 and married his wife, Jennifer, in 2007. The couple have two sons, Landon and Tate.
