JBU Art Gallery Shows ‘In Defense of the Black Art: A Didactic Experience’ Photo Exhibit
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (January 8, 2013) - The photography of S. Neal Holland, associate professor of photography at JBU and Kyle Agee, adjunct instructor at JBU, will be on display in the John Brown University Art Gallery Jan. 15 through Feb. 13. The exhibit, “In Defense of the Black Art: A Didactic Experience”will open with a reception on Tuesday evening, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and will feature a gallery talk by the artists at 6:30 p.m.
The exhibit includes 20 pieces created using wet plate collodion. This method represents a period of 19th century photography where images weren’t merely taken, but crafted. The wet plate collodion process was invented in 1851 and used until the mass produced gelatin film replaced it in the early 1900s. Wet plate is a positive process where the light parts of the subject remain light in the final plate.
“Seeing a true collodion print in person is a rare contemporary opportunity,” said Charles Peer, gallery director. “The artwork of Holland and Agee bring together elements of both the traditional and modern photographic art form that we rarely think of as compatible. Few people remember or still practice these labor intensive alternative processes.”
Holland is an associate professor of photography in the visual art department at JBU. His previous work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions since 1993. In addition, his work is also featured in private collections in the United States and abroad.
Agee currently serves as an adjunct instructor in the visual art department of JBU. Agee has worked as a contract photographer since 2008 on projects with the Arkansas State Police, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the United States Air Force and the United States Navy.
The gallery is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. or by special arrangement. The opening reception will be Tuesday, Jan 15, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. For more information contact the JBU Department of Visual Arts at 479-238-8561.
