JBU Hosts Computer Programming Competition
Siloam Springs, Ark. (Jan. 27, 2015) - John Brown University will host the 2015 Computer Programming Contest on Saturday, Jan. 31 for area high school students to compete for a $1,000 scholarship to JBU.
Teams can be two, three or four students, and each student on the winning team will receive a one-time $1,000 scholarship to JBU. Members of the second place team will each receive a one-time $500 JBU scholarship.
“The students will work together to solve a series of problems and submit their solutions to a panel of judges for approval,” said Dr. Ted Song, assistant professor of engineering. “If the solution works, the team is given a point for the problem solved. If it doesn’t work, the team can decide to rework the problem or start a new one.”
The competition will be held at the Balzer Technology Center at JBU at 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Teams will be given instructions and a practice problem at 9:30 a. m. to get familiar with the structure. The formal competition will commence at 10:00 and scholarships will be awarded at 4 p.m. Lunch is provided at no cost to the competitors.
“We’re excited to offer scholarships to the winning teams, this year,” said Dr. Tim Gilmour, assistant professor of engineering. “We’ve had competitions like this for our undergraduate students, but this is the first time it is open to high school students to compete.”
Competitors will use C, C++, C#, Java or Python to work solutions. Teams will be scored using three metrics: the number of correct problems submitted, the elapsed time from the beginning of the competition to the correct submission and the number of incorrect submissions prior to a correct submission.
