John Brown University Hosts Annual Academic Celebration

SILOAM SPRINGS, ARK. (April 18, 2016) – John Brown University will host the annual Celebration of Academic Excellence this week April 19 - 23. The events will showcase undergraduate research, performance and creative work completed this academic year.

The celebration will include performances by the JBU Chamber Orchestra, featuring selections from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film score, and the JBU Women’s Chorus. JBU will also host the annual Disaster Shelter Competition this Thursday through Saturday, sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse. Students will present research from their fields of study, including social science, literature, business, language, creative writing, religion, STEM and political science. Additionally, graduating seniors in the Visual Arts will present their portfolios at the Annual Art Portfolio Show.

“We started the event about ten years ago because we wanted a designated time to highlight JBU’s best and brightest students,” said Brad Gambill, associate professor of English. “The students put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into these projects and have to be nominated by a faculty member to present, so many of the students are just honored to have been nominated.”

Also, JBU will present the Faculty Excellence Award during the university’s chapel service on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Ozarks. The award is given to a faculty member each year for excellence in teaching and scholarship, service or spiritual modeling.
