Late Goal Sends Women's Soccer to Draw with No. 20 Olivet Nazarene

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Junior Sara Frey scored her second goal of the season in the 77th minute and freshman Katherine Haar added a goal and an assist as the John Brown University women's soccer team finished a rain-soaked affair with host No. 20 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) in a 2-2 draw on Friday (Sept. 9) evening at the Snowbarger Athletic Complex.

Frey knotted the score at two when Haar's free kick from the right flank took an undeflected route all the way to the left post.  Frey was able to loft a shot over ONU keeper Sarah Vrosh despite the various puddles that engulfed the goalmouth.

"There were moments where it felt like this game could have gone either way," admitted head coach Kathleen Paulsen. "It turned into a gritty game because of the weather conditions and I was really proud of our team's response and the way they kept fighting.

"We were down twice and came back to tie it both times and showed some resiliency. We are looking forward to another good game tomorrow."

Things didn't start well for the Golden Eagles (4-0-1) when Jessica Schmidt scored just 27 seconds into the game to give the Tigers a quick 1-0 lead.

Matching the hosts' quick start, Haar tallied her second of the season just 62 seconds later. After fresehman Jastin Redman fed her the ball, Haar cut down the middle of the field and unleashed a shot that found the upper third of the goal, beating Vrosh as she lost her footing.

Sarah Buffum put the Tigers (2-0-1) up for a second time in the 32nd minute. The lead would hold until Frey's timely goal.

The Tigers out-shot John Brown 18-14, but senior keeper Kristen Morency (4-0-1) made six saves in the tie. At the half, the Golden Eagles held the edge in shots, 9-3. Vrosh finished with a trio of saves.

The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow at noon, taking on Concordia (Mich.) in the finale of the tournament.
