Lopsided Shot Margin Doesn’t Translate into Victory for Men’s Soccer
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (August 28, 2015) -- The John Brown men’s soccer team fired 20 shots, six on goal, but couldn’t solve Central Baptist (Ark.) as the two squads battled to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in JBU’s home opener at Alumni Field.
The 20 shots marked a season-high for the Golden Eagles (0-2-1), who are still in search of its first victory of the season. The goalless contest also marks the second time this season JBU has been unable to find the back of the net.
In front of a raucous crowd of over 1,000 spectators, JBU received four shots from freshman Ryan Williams, who came close to breaking the scoreless deadlock a few times on set pieces. Junior Marco Cardona also fired three shots while freshmen Connor Haney, Santiago Venegas and senior Zeke Zumbro added a pair of shots in the draw.
While the Mustangs (0-0-1) didn’t have a strong scoring opportunity, JBU's best chance came in the waning moments of the second overtime when Zumbro broke into the CBC box nearly unattended. Just prior to releasing a shot, Zumbro was disrupted by a Mustang defender, forcing the shot to go just wide of CBC keeper Bryce Deaton.
Sophomore Adam Holt was called upon to make four saves in the tie, collecting his fourth career shutout. Deaton made six saves in net for the visitors.
John Brown will return to the pitch on Saturday (Sept. 5) when it welcomes first-year program Evangel (Mo.) to Alumni Field.
