Men's Soccer Faces Concordia in Fall Classic

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (September 6, 2013) -- The Golden Eagles open its 2013 home slate of games at Alumni Field this afternoon as it welcomes Concordia (Neb.) to Siloam Springs for the second match of day one of the Quality Inn Fall Classic at 4:00 p.m.

John Brown is fresh off a 2-1-0 start to the season, falling 5-2 to No. 14 Oklahoma Wesleyan before taking a trip to western Iowa and defeating Northwestern (Iowa) and Dordt, 2-1 and 5-1, respectively.

Sophomore midfield Eli Simonsen captured a three-point match at Northwestern as he assisted junior midfielder Martin Gonzalez’s early second-half goal before booting in a direct kick of his own later in the half. Junior keeper Matt Henry started the match, recording five saves, before giving way to senior netminder Pablo Garcia who earned the victory in goal, knocking aside the only Red Raider shot attempt in the second half.

On Saturday, JBU ran all over the Defenders as three players landed multi-point contests. Simonsen earned two assist while Gonzalez and Sophomore Zeke Zumbro each chipped in with a pair of goals, finishing with four points apiece.

Garcia bumped his record to 2-1-0 with the one-save victory, allowing just one goal on a Dordt penalty kick opportunity in the second half.

Concordia enters the contest with a 1-1-0 record after falling in its season and home-opener to Benedictine (Kan.), 4-1. The Bulldogs were outshot 17-2 in the match as the Ravens netted two goals in the last ten minutes to pull away from its narrow one-goal lead.

CUNE then hit the road to face Academy of International Business (Iowa) in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Bulldogs won despite again being heavily outshot in the contest (29-5), but goalkeeper Brendan Buchanan came up with a 17-save effort to earn the complete-game shutout. Two first-half tallies proved to be enough as Buchanan’s strong play earned Concordia a 2-0 to even its record at 1-1-0.

Three players have scored lone goals for the Bulldogs as Buchanan has started and finished both Concordia contests this season.
