Men's Soccer Opens Homestand with Inaugural Night Game
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (September 5, 2014) -- The Golden Eagles may enter its first home match of the season with a winless record, but JBU will have a raucous home crowd and brand new lights to welcome fans to Alumni Field in 2014.
In the first contest, John Brown out-shot the host Lancers (2-1-0) in the season-opener, but allowed a goal in the 56th minute, falling 1-0 to Grace. GC’s Austin Altimus picked out a nifty pass in traffic and sent a ball to Kyle Hamlin on the left side of the box, and the junior striker took care of the rest, slotting the ball into the back of the net in the 56th minute.
The Golden Eagles (0-1) used 5-4 and 9-8 shooting advantages in the first and second half, respectively, but were unable to solve Lancer netminder Robbie Barnhill (1-0), who made five saves in the winning effort. Freshman netminder Adam Holt (0-1) secured five saves for JBU, including four in the second half, but still suffered the loss in his collegiate debut.
Grace earned an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Seniors Martin Gonzalez and Ryan Duncan each recorded a pair of shots on goal. Junior defender Logan Hellinghausen and senior midfielder Jose Nino both sent shots on goal in the losing effort.
JBU then made its way to Ft. Wayne, Ind., two days later to face the Cougars of Staint Francis. Senior striker Ryan Duncan’s first goal of the season gave the Golden Eagles its first lead of the season, but late strikes by Saint Francis in the second half and overtime sent the Cougars to a 2-1 double-overtime victory.
Duncan tallied the first goal of the season for JBU in the 60th minute off a pass from junior forward Zeke Zumbro. With the lead in hand, and USF earning a red card in the 82nd minute, the Golden Eagles looked poised to capture its first victory of the season.
Unfortunately, the Cougars scored the game-tying goal in the 88th minute when USF’s Jason Walcutt buried a pass from Josh Underwood to knot the score at one. Despite holding a 14-3 shot advantage in the second half, JBU was forced to play extra time.
The Cougars out-shot John Brown 4-1 in the extra time, forcing freshman keeper Adam Holt (0-2) to make a pair of saves. With the match reaching a conclusion, Mitchell Holloway ended JBU’s hopes of a draw when he scored the game-winner from Alexis daSilva in the 109th minute of play.
The Golden Eagles held a 20-13 shooting advantage over Saint Francis, including a 8-6 margin in corner kicks.
William Woods enters the contest with an undefeated 3-0-1 record. Last night, the Owls chased Ottawa (Kan.) out of Firley Field, 5-0. Freshman keeper Connor Cable has racked up three clean sheets so far this season and has surrendered only one goal.
Senior defender Jacob Hawes (4), sophomore midfielder Anthony Moscatello (3) and junior midfielder Alex Severino (3) lead the Owls in goals while senior midfielders Paulo Conelian and Luca Stroeter have passed out six and four assists, respectively.
William Woods began the season with a 6-0 whitewash of Ozark Christian (Mo.) on Aug. 26 before drawing with Avila (Mo.), 1-1, on Aug. 31. On Sept. 2, the Owls faced its second Heart of America Athletic Conference team, Culver-Stockton (Mo.) and posted a convincing 3-0 score.
