Parish's Season-High 17 Points Leads John Brown Over Science and Arts
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (January 31, 2013) - The Golden Eagles (9-12, 4-5 SAC) used a season-high 17-point output from senior guard Anna Parish to race past Science and Arts (Okla.), 79-69, as John Brown picked up its fourth Sooner Athletic Conference victory Thursday night at Bill George Arena.
Parish finished the evening 3-of-6 from the field, all from behind the arc, and included a perfect 8-of-8 game from the free throw line to accompany her two assists and three rebounds. Two other Golden Eagles contributed double-digit points tonight as junior guard Sierra Shipley landed 16 points, converting a game-high four triples while freshman forward Brooke Barker came off the bench and chipped in 11 points, two assists and three rebounds.
Rocio Medrano led all scorers with 18 points for the Drovers (10-12, 1-9 SAC). Krista Ford contributed 16 points while Paige Pulliam went 4-for-4 from three-point range to finish with 14.
John Brown tied a season-high 14 conversions from behind the arc, ending the game shooting 14-of-33 from distance as seven Golden Eagles earned at least one trey on the evening.
The first half was all JBU after the Drovers took early 2-0 and 5-2 leads, its only of the game. After an Abbie Warren triple tied the score, the Golden Eagles soared on a 12-2 run, powered by two triples from Lauren Rogers and another trey by Sierra Shipley. The threes continued to rain from more players as Tristan Carrasquillo, Barker and Parish pushed the home squad's lead to 17, 28-11. The lead ballooned to 19 when Shipley's second trey gave John Brown a commanding 35-16 lead with 6:06 remaining in the first stanza.
USAO responded by piecing together a small 7-0 run of its own, but Morgan Ankrom's bucket in the paint with 10 seconds left in the half handed the Golden Eagles a first-half high 21-point lead headed to the intermission.
JBU shot an impressive 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the three point line in the first half and played staunch defense at its own arc, forcing the Drovers into missing 12 of its 14 three-point attempts (14.3 percent), while limiting Science and Arts to an anemic 28.9 percent (11-of-38) shooting clip from the field.
Both squads traded baskets during the first 10 minutes of the second half, but Barker's triple at the 11:12 mark secured John Brown's largest lead of the game, 23 points, and a commanding 63-40 lead.
The Drovers would cut the lead back to single digits, courtesy of a 12-2 run, with only 2:49 remaining as the visitors whittled the JBU lead to nine, 72-63. Parish's fourth triple of the game pushed the lead back to double-digits as the Golden Eagles completed the 69-59 victory. John Brown converted all seven shots its attempted from the free throw line in the second half, finishing 17-of-19 for the game.
Although the Golden Eagles committed 10 turnovers, it made Science and Arts pay for its 13 miscues, turning 18 points as a result of Drover errors. USAO edged the John Brown reserves, winning the battle of the benches, 30-26.
Kortni Barenberg pulled down a team-high six rebounds to accompany her six points, one game removed from her tying her career-high 17-point output. JBU lost the battle of the boards, 40-31.
The ladies will have a day off before it hosts St. Gregory's (Okla.) (8-14, 1-7 SAC) at Bill George Arena on Saturday, Feb. 2, afternoon to a 3:00 p.m. tip.
