Rakestraw Named Academic All-American® for Second-Consecutive Year
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (February 18, 2013) - For the second-consecutive year, senior men's basketball guard Coleson Rakestraw has been named first-team Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Men’s Basketball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Capital One/CoSIDA College Division Academic All-America® basketball teams are comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.
Rakestraw's nomination is the second of his career as he continues to hold the high distinction of being the only athlete in Golden Eagle athletics history to earn a spot on the All-America team.
Rakestraw, an electrical and computer engineering major from Siloam Springs, Ark., boasts a 3.92 G.P.A. Rakestraw paces the Golden Eagles’ offense with 11.6 points per game. He has helped John Brown post a 24-4 record and a 13-1 conference mark while leading the Golden Eagles to its first-ever Sooner Athletic Conference regular season championship. A career 40-percent, three-point shooter, he is 14th in NAIA Division I this season with a 44.2 shooting percentage from three-point range.
He is also 21st in the nation in total three-pointers made (65) and 37th in triples made per game (2.321). Rakestraw currently has 292 career three-pointers and tied a career-high earlier this season, draining six triples in a 88-78 loss to Trinity Western (B.C.) on Dec. 19, 2012.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
