Redman’s Penalty Kick Sinks Wayland Baptist in Overtime
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (October 24, 2015) -- Freshman striker Jastin Redman scored her fifth goal in three games, posting both JBU tallies on the afternoon, and converted a penalty kick in the 96th minute, helping the John Brown women’s soccer team (9-6-1, 5-1-1 SAC) to a 2-1 come-from-behind overtime victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday (Oct. 24) at Alumni Field.
The victory is the Golden Eagles’ third straight as it has out-scored its opponents 7-2 over the 270:00 stretch of play.
Redman continued her torrid output with her second-consecutive two-goal outing, notching her 13th and 14th goals of the season. It was also her fourth game-winner of 2015.
The hosts out-shot the Pioneers (4-6-3, 3-2-2 SAC), 30-8, on the afternoon, placing 16 shots on goal against WBU keeper Bailey Stengler. Stengler was magnificent in the contest, collecting 14 saves, but was still stung with the extra time loss. Junior Hannah Poor (9-5-1) continued her stellar play with three saves on the four shots Baptist sent on target.
The Pioneers struck first and carried a 1-0 lead into the half. Julia Bianchi sent a free kick from just outside the middle of the box to the top shelf from 20 yards out in the 13th minute, stunning the Alumni Field crowd.
Despite owning a lot of the possession in the early goings of the second half, it wasn’t until the 70th minute that Redman finally placed the Golden Eagles on the board.
Freshman Melody Hagen collected the ball in the attacking third and sent a through ball to Redman, who turned and attacked the goal. Redman then raced into the box and cut to her right, rifling a shot over Stengler to knot the score at one apiece.
The game-winner finally came in the late moments of the first overtime. Redman carried the ball into the box on a counter-attack, and faced a trio of Pioneer defenders. After cutting across the box, Redman was fouled and the official awarded her a penalty kick.
Redman calmly took her opportunity and buried the clincher past Stengler, relieving John Brown of the possible upset by Wayland. Redman is now 3-of-3 on the season from the penalty kick line.
“We always have to prepare for the unexpected,” head coach Kathleen Paulsen said of going to extra time against Wayland. “Their keeper was unbelievable and made some huge saves for them. We just stayed with it and stuck to the game plan. We were pounding at the door and we knew [goals] would happen eventually.”
After the match, the Golden Eagles honored its four seniors: Nicole Kosin, Julie Whitlow, Alex Fahr and Kristen Morency.
JBU returns to the pitch on Thursday (Oct. 29) when it finishes the regular season with its annual Texas road trip. The Golden Eagles will start with a date with Texas Wesleyan at 6 p.m. in Ft. Worth and will finish up on Saturday (Oct. 31) at Southwestern A.G. (Texas) at 1 p.m.
