Southwestern, Oklahoma Baptist drop men's tennis
Winfield, Kan. -- Junior Phillip Todd recorded a win at No. 6 singles, but the John Brown University men's tennis team couldn't muster much more than that, falling in a pair of matches to Southwestern (Kan.) and NCAA II Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday (March 4) at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Center.
Bright and early at 8 a.m., the Golden Eagles (2-4) took on weekend host Southwestern (Kan.), falling 8-1 to the Moundbuilders. Southwestern swept the matchup save No. 6 singles, where junior Phillip Todd notched his second singles victory of the year, taking down Pete Farmer in a wild matchup. Farmer took the first set easily, 6-1, but Todd scratched back and narrowly produced a 7-5 win in set two. Riding the momentum, Todd finally finished off Farmer 11-9 in the tiebreak.
Junior Fernando Hurley took Tomas Yacuzio to the brink by foring a third set after Yacuzio had to churn out a 6-4 second-set win. Yacuzio took the third, 10-4.
The tandem of freshman Jordan Scoggins and junior Cole Mowrer nearly created another point for the Golden Eagles at third doubles, taking Stephen Le and Jonathan Buckner to a tiebreak, falling 7-2.
JBU had a difficult time creating any momentum against Oklahoma Baptist, falling to the Bison in straight sets.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday (March 8) in Ft. Smith, Ark., against NCAA II Arkansas at Ft. Smith
