Twelve Fall Athletes Named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (December 6, 2013) -- Twelve Golden Eagle fall sport athletes have been tabbed for the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete list for their respective sports, the NAIA national office announced today.
To be eligible for nomination, the student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.
A pair of senior men's cross country runners, Caleb Fuller and Stephen Borengasser have been named to the list. Fuller, from Eckert, Colo., majors in electrical engineering and turned in his season-best performance at the NAIA Mid-States Classic where he finished 122nd, crossing the finish line at 28:00. Borengasser, a native of Borden, Ind., is a graphic design major and earned his top time of the 2013 season also at the NAIA Mid-State Classic where his 29:25 mark landed him 175th place.
Kari Miller, Kelsey Rae and Melissa Roth were also honored from the women's cross country team. The trio each posted their best times of the year at the NAIA Mid-States Classic as Miller, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., captured 69th place, clocking in at 19:41. Rae, a junior from McKinney, Texas, crossed the line at 22:50 (200th) while Roth, a senior from Green, Kan., nabbed 87th place with a 20:02 time. Miller is a history and Biblical studies major while Rae focuses on family and human services. Roth majors in accounting.
Senior Whitney Brannan and junior Chloe Fennel headline the nominees from the women's soccer team. Brannan, a Bixby, Okla. native, despite suffering a season-ending injury midway through the 2013 campaign, finished with one goal, a game-winner, and one assists in five games played. She is majoring in biology. Fennell is a illustration major and hails from Tahlequah, Okla. She made an appearance in nine games this season and scored her first collegiate goal in a 4-2 victory over St. Gregory's (Okla.) on Nov. 5.
The tandem of junior Jose Nino and senior Luke Theimer account for the men's soccer Scholar-Athletes. Nino, a construction management major from Katy, Texas, saw playing time in 12 games this season for JBU, notching a shot on goal. An Omaha, Neb. native, Theimer played in 19 games for John Brown, earning a trio of goals and a pair of assists, finishing with eight points on the year. Theimer majors in family and human services.
Finally, Kendra Ammons, Vanessa Uhrhahn and Becca Young comprise the trio of volleyball players to land on the list. Ammons, a junior from Wichita Kansas, is majoring in photography and notched 33 digs and a trio of assists this past year. Uhrhahn, a creative writing major from Greenwood, Ark., played in 27 matches, recording 77 kills, 63 digs and 24 blocks in her junior season. Young, a native of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, majors in psychology and biology. A junior, Young chipped in with 205 digs this past season.
