Volleyball Claims Top Slot in Conference Team Academic Awards

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (July 15, 2015) -- To finish off the inaugural year of academic awards given out by the Sooner Athletic Conference, the John Brown volleyball team picked up a share of the top team GPA, the conference offices announced this morning.

The Team Academic Awards, presented by Cypress Risk Management, is given annually to each sport's team whose student-athletes achieve the highest combined grade-point average in conference-sponsored sports. Team GPA is computed based on all team members certified for eligibility in a given season and will include their cumulative GPA for the entire academic year.

The Golden Eagles tied with Wayland Baptist (Texas) for the top spot in the sport of volleyball as both squads earned a 3.48 grade-point average.

Wayland Baptist and Oklahoma City each had the most teams recognized with four each. WBU topped the lists in baseball, women's golf, men's golf and volleyball. OCU led the way in men's cross country, women's cross country, men's soccer and softball.

Oklahoma Baptist had the top team grade point averages in three sports, including women's soccer, women's track and field, and women's basketball while Southwestern A.G. (Texas) had the best GPA in men's track and field. A total of 45 SAC teams had cumulative grade point averages higher than 3.0 with volleyball having the most with six.

Four other JBU teams were eligible for the award including women's cross country (3.57), women's soccer (3.36), women's tennis (3.30) and men's cross country (3.15).
