Women's Basketball Methodically Dispatches Bacone in Convincing Fashion

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Behind a career night from sophomore Kimmy Deines, the John Brown womens basketball team (16-12, 9-7 SAC) drained 14 triples and held the visitors to just one make behind the arc to complete a 75-57 win over Bacone (Okla.) on Saturday (Feb. 20) afternoon inside Bill George Arena.

Deines led JBU with a career-high 20 points, drilling 4-of-7 attempts from downtown. Hitting 8-of-10 at the line to complete her personal best scoring output, Deines also distributed a game-high five assists, leading the hosts to 20 assists on 23 made field goals (86.9 percent).

Moving to 12-0 on the season when out-rebounding the opposition, the Golden Eagles were led by freshman Baily Cameron who snatched a game-high eight boards to accompany seven points. Armed with a 36-30 edge on the boards, JBU manufactured eight second-chance points off seven offensive rebounds.

It was really the three-point shooting effort that created the difference in John Browns 12th win at Bill George Arena this season. The hosts shot 42.4 percent (14-of-33) from behind the arc, while Bacone (9-16, 5-11 SAC) managed just 1-of-17 (5.9 percent) from downtown. Junior Kodee Powell sunk 4-of-11 triple attempts and finished 6-of-13 from the field overall (16 points). Sophomore Courtney Fine came off the bench to provide three treys of her own on five attempts, and used her 11 points to help John Brown own a 20-7 advantage in points from reserves.

Owning a 10-point lead at the break, JBU came out in the third quarter and owned a 22-14 advantage behind a quartet of triples in the frame. Fine scored two while Powell and sophomore Jana Schammel each added a trey to make up for a three-minute period where the Golden Eagles werent able to add to the scoreboard.

Triples continued to rain early in the fourth. Fine kicked things off with a long-range shot from the left arc before freshman Preslea Reece added a bucket. The lead grew to a game-high 22 points at the 7:34 mark when Powell hit her third triple of the game. Again, another 3:33 span elapsed without any points from the hosts, but Deines drilled her final trey of the afternoon with 2:42 left before converting all three from the line after taking a foul outside the arc at the 52 second mark.

JBU shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the field and nailed 15-of-18 from the stripe. The Warriors shot just 37.9 percent (22-of-58) and committed 16 turnovers. The Golden Eagle hot shooting effort helped avoid a glaring 25 turnovers in the convincing victory.

Kim Scott led Bacone with 20 points, while Jasmine Flanagan had 11 points.

Still tied for fourth place in the Sooner Athletic, the Golden Eagles will return to action on Thursday (Feb. 25) in the final regular-season road action. John Brown will tip-off with St. Gregorys (Okla.) at 6 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
