Women’s Basketball Drops Fifth-Straight, Falls 55-38 at Southwestern Christian
BETHANY, Okla. (January 14, 2016) -- The John Brown women’s basketball team (9-8, 2-3 SAC) shot a season-worst 26.4 percent from the field and dropped its fifth-straight, this time a 55-38 setback at Southwestern Christian (Okla.) on Thursday (Jan. 14) evening inside Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
For the first time this year, the Golden Eagles failed to produce a double-digit scorer as junior Kodee Powell’s trio of triples vaulted her to nine points to lead the visitors. Bailey Cameron hit 4-of-9 from the floor to contribute eight points and seven boards. JBU finished the contest just 14-of-53 from the floor.
In an all-around difficult evening, the Golden Eagles also set season lows in rebounds (21) and free throws made (2) and attempted (4). Senior Brooke Barker hit both of hers while Cameron missed a pair from the line.
The Golden Eagles now drop to 1-4 all-time against the Eagles (6-9, 3-2 SAC) and 1-2 in Bethany.
Sophomore Jana Schammel and sophomores Kimmy Deines and Courtney Fine each hit triples in the first quarter and finished 3-of-15 from the floor to face a 14-9 deficit. The second quarter didn’t improve much as an 8-0 Eagle rally pushed the lead to 22-9, and the visitors didn’t score until Deines hit a triple at the 4:11 mark. Cameron followed up the triple with consecutive field goals for a quick 7-0 run, but SCU responded with a half-ending 5-0 rally to build a 27-16 lead at the intermission.
The Golden Eagles hit just 6-of-28 (24.1 percent) from the field in the first half. Four of its six field goals came from long range.
The deficit grew to 16, 32-16, but four points from Cameron and Barker in the quarter, capped off by a Powell triple, kept the Golden Eagles within striking distance, 42-29, after three.
Having rallied from larger deficits of late, the Golden Eagles couldn’t mount one tonight as JBU shot 3-of-15 in the final period, allowing Southwestern Christian a 13-9 advantage in the frame.
The loss is JBU’s lowest scoring output since a 73-38 loss at Oklahoma City on March 2, 2015.
SCU’s Andi McGill scored a game-best 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor while Miranda Janz and Kylee Severin added eight apiece. Eliora Johnson nearly missed the double-double, but set a career-best 20 rebounds to accompany nine points.
The Golden Eagles, which have lost five straight away from Bill George Arena, return to Siloam Springs for the first time in over a month to face Texas Wesleyan on Saturday (Jan. 16). Tip is slated for 1 p.m.
