Women’s Tennis Nabs Second-Consecutive Win Over Oklahoma Wesleyan; Men Fall, 6-3
BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (April 15, 2013) - Krizana Saucedo’s 6-0, 6-0 singles victory at No. 5, coupled with her hand in an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles, powered the Golden Eagles to an easy 8-1 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan, its second in two weeks. The men didn’t fare as well, however, falling in its second-consecutive match to the Eagles, losing 6-3 to remain winless on the season.
Teaming up with Saucedo at No. 3 doubles was Marissa Podgorski as the tandem swept Sarah Dunn and Madison Deck. Concurrently, John Brown earned two more victories in doubles action when Leah Engstrom and Michelle Caneday earned their second victory at No. 1 doubles of the season, defeating Breanna Rovenstine and Misty Rothfuss, 8-5. JBU completed the 3-0 lead as Kellie Mowrer and Tiffany Prieb moved to 2-1 on the season at No. 2 doubles, grabbing an 8-2 win.
The Golden Eagles took quick advantage of Oklahoma Wesleyan at flights 4-6 as Prieb, Saucedo and Katie Bellinger breezed in their singles’ matchups by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Engstrom evened her singles’ record to 5-5 overall and moved to 2-1 at the No. 1 slot by taking care of Rovenstine, 6-2, 6-4. Mowrer was pushed to the limit at No. 3, but held on to win a third-set tiebreaker, 10-5. Mowrer won the first set 6-2, but allowed Chloe Canfield to steal the second, 6-4.
The Golden Eagles’ only loss of the afternoon came at an exciting matchup at No. 2 singles where Caneday fell in a closely-contest third-set tiebreaker.
On the men’s side, the Golden Eagles jetted out to a quick 2-0 lead as OKWU was only able to field five players for the match. The Eagles would take advantage of the chances they could play at, nabbing each flight in singles play, until Blake Zoellner broke the streak at No. 4, coming back from a 6-2 first-set hole. Zoellner managed to steal the second set, 6-0, then continued the momentum into the third-set tiebreaker en route to the win.
The ladies improve their record to 3-8 on the season while the men fall to 0-10. Both teams resume action on Thursday, April 18, when the Golden Eagles host Central Christian (Kan.) to a 1:00 p.m. match at the JBU Tennis Courts.
