Basketball drops a pair to Bison

Shawnee, Okla. (December 31, 2011) - Both JBU women and men’s basketball teams loss on Saturday afternoon to conference foe Oklahoma Baptist.  The women fell 69-60, while the 20th ranked JBU men dropped a 73-52 decision to the NAIA’s 3rd ranked Bison men.

On the women’s side, JBU (7-6, 1-4 SAC) got a team high 15 points and five rebounds from sophomore Jessica Berlin.  Senior Chelsea Garrison added nine.

For OBU (6-6, 2-2 SAC), three players finished in double digits led by Ashton Pittman with 21 points.  Charity Fowler added 13, and Raquel Dudzevich put in 10.

After falling behind 35-28 at halftime, the Lady Eagles quickly pulled within two after a 5-0 run to open the second half.  But the Lady Bison responded and pushed the margin back to double figures and led by as many as 14 before hanging on for the nine point victory.

For the game, JBU shot 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the floor, while OBU shot 34.8 percent (24-of-69).  Despite winning the rebounding battle 47-36, JBU committed 24 turnovers while forcing only 10.

In men’s action, JBU (10-3, 2-3 SAC) got off to a hot start and led 19-9 after a three pointer from junior EJ McWoods with 9:33 left in the first half.  But the Bison warmed up and slowly chipped into the lead before eventually tying things up at 26 after a trey from Heath McKay at the 3:13 mark.  A free throw from OBU’s Marques Anderson gave the Bison the one point 34-33 lead heading into the break.

In the second half, JBU senior Andy Garcia scored to put JBU ahead out of the gates.  But things would go back and forth over the next seven minutes before OBU’s Deangelo McIntosh gave the Bison the lead for good at 42-41 with 12:29 left in the game.

From this point, OBU turned up the heat and limited JBU to only three field goal makes the rest of the way.

Junior Coleson Rakestraw paced JBU with 17 points, while OBU got a game high 22 points from senior Emmanuel Wilson.  McIntosh finished with 18 and McKay added 11 for the Bison.

As a team, JBU shot 38 percent (19-of-50) for the game, while giving up 49.1 percent (26-of-53) to the Bison.  OBU won the battle of the boards 36-28.  Turnovers were 17-14 in favor of OBU.

JBU won’t have long to think about the loss as both teams return to action on Monday to face St. Gregory’s (Okla.).  The SGU women are currently 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the SAC, while the SGU men are 3-7 overall and 0-4 in SAC play.
