Men battle to stalemate

Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 29, 2011) - The JBU men’s soccer team finished their Thursday evening match with a 2-2 tie after 110 minutes of action against Lubbock Christian (Texas).

The men move to 3-5-1 overall and 0-0-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

LCU struck first when Billy Forbes managed to beat several defenders before scoring unassisted at the 13:21 mark.  But JBU quickly responded when senior Joel Thomas connected with freshman Martin Gonzalez in the box for the equalizer.

In the 22nd minute, sophomore Luke Theimer took advantage of the foul by LCU’s keeper and booted in a penalty kick giving JBU a one goal edge.

JBU took the 2-1 lead into the intermission, but Forbes struck again, this time off the assist from Byron Knowles at the 61:46 mark.

Both teams traded punches the rest of the way before ending deadlocked after regulation.

JBU controlled the first overtime period with a 4-0 advantage on shots but couldn’t manage to convert. 

In the second overtime, both teams had several attempts, but came up empty as tired legs prevailed.

For the match,  LCU (6-1-2, 0-0-1) out shot JBU 28-23 with a 12-5 shots on goal advantage.

JBU’s keeper Pablo Garcia picked up 10 saves, while LCU’s Hunter Ganze had three.

Up next, JBU returns to action at home on Saturday against Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 3 p.m.
