Siloam Springs, Ark (April 10, 2003) - Rick Ostrander, Dean of Undergraduate Studies at John Brown University, has received a national Fulbright Award.

The prestigious Fulbright Scholar Program sends scholars to other countries to teach and conduct research. Ostrander will be teaching courses in American History and doing curriculum consulting at the University of Wurzburg, in Wurzburg, Germany. He and his family will stay in Wurzburg from March until July 2004. Ostrander will also begin the process of establishing a summer studies program in Wurzburg for JBU in future years.

Ostrander began the process of applying for the Fulbright Award last summer with an application including project descriptions, recommendation letters, course syllabi and a resume of publications. He received notice that he made the first cut in January 2003 and received official word that he received the award in March.

“I hope to be refreshed and stimulated by working with a German university and being in Europe itself. Furthermore, establishing a relationship with a quality institution in central Europe is another way that JBU can further globalize its campus and its influence.”

Dr. Ostrander earned his doctorate and master’s degrees in American History from the University of Notre Dame, and his concentrations included American religious history, American cultural and intellectual history, American literature, Religion and science in the 19th century and The Reformation.

Prior to joining John Brown University as assistant professor of history in 1997, Ostrander was assistant professor of history at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix Arizona.

John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of more than 1,700 students from 42 states and 45 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
