Women Win in OT

Chickasha, Okla. (February 17, 2011) - It took extra time to accomplish it, but in the end the JBU women’s basketball team escaped with a 67-66 overtime victory against Science & Arts of Okla. on Thursday night in Chickasha.

With the win, JBU improves to 19-7 overall and 13-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.  USAO, meanwhile, drops to 7-19 overall and 3-16 in the SAC.

Chelsea Garrison led the way for the Lady Eagles with 17 points and 13 rebounds.  And Anna Parish finished with 15 points, six boards, and four assists.  Kortni Kendrick also finished in the double digits with 10.

Aita Gueye led the Lady Drovers with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and six steals.  She was followed by Tashina Ototivo with 15 points and nine boards.

With 5.2 seconds remaining and down by two, JBU got the ball in to Anna Parish who drove to the hole uncontested and tied things up to force overtime.

In the overtime, JBU quickly sprinted out of the gates in overtime and went ahead by five after a layup by Sierra Shipley and three pointer from Parish. 

With under 30 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Gueye sunk a three pointer to help USAO pull within two, 63-65, but a pair of free-throw makes from Emily Ortiz gave JBU just enough breathing room to hang on for the win despite a bucket from Maggie Oliver and free-throw from Paige Pulliam in the closing seconds.

For the game, JBU shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field while holding USAO to 37.1 percent (26-of-70).  JBU also dominated the glass winning the rebounding battle 47-37.

Up next, JBU prepares to face No. 23 Southern Nazarene at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.
