Men Fight Off Pioneers

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 13, 2011) - The JBU men’s basketball team battled to a 61-55 win over Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Thursday night in Bill George Arena.  With the win, the men improve to 14-3 overall and 6-3 in the SAC.

Senior Sam Bartlett led JBU with 17 points and seven rebounds, while fellow senior Andrius Mikutis added 10.

WBU (6-10, 1-8), got 15 points and three boards from Bobby Watkins, while George Williams added 14.

After an ugly first half, JBU held a nine point, 28-19 advantage going into the break.

In the second period, the tides changed as WBU opened on a 10-2 to take their first lead of the game at 31-30.  JBU regrouped, however, and responded with a 10-0 to recapture the lead and go ahead by nine, 40-31, at the 12:25 mark.

With 6:38 left, Williams pulled the Pioneers within two, 46-48, after sinking a pair from the foul line, but back to back buckets from Bartlett and Miller and double bonus free-throw makes from Mikutis put JBU back up by eight, 54-46, with 4:40 left.

Wayland fought themselves back to within striking distance after Rodrigo Silva put in a layup off the feed from C’Jamarion Leashore to make it 56-53 JBU with 1:27 left in the game.  JBU went to the line on their next possession and made 1-of-2, but WBU couldn’t convert on their end and had to foul sending Bartlett to the line where he was a perfect 4-of-4 in the final 20 seconds.

For the game, JBU shot 38 percent (19-of-50), while holding WBU to 38.3 percent (18-of-47).  JBU dominated the boards 43-28 but committed 16 turnovers while forcing only 11.

The men return to Bill George Arena on Saturday to face Lubbock Christian (Texas) at 3 p.m. in an SAC bout.
