Siloam Springs, Ark (March 5, 2003) - Kendra McCormick, John Brown University basketball player from Siloam Springs, has been selected by the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) as the Freshman Player of the Year for women’s basketball. McCormick, an All-State player for Siloam Springs High School last year, has continued to bring in honors for her skills on the court. McCormick averaged 12.4 points per game with 372 total points for the regular season and has a shooting percentage of 52.4 from the field while collecting rebounds at the rate of 5.23 per game. She is ranked 13th in scoring in the SAC and 5th in field goal percentage. In addition to being named Freshman of the Year, McCormick was also selected as Honorable Mention All Conference. Senior Katie Elliott was named to the SAC 3rd team All-Conference for the second year. Elliott also made the team last year as a junior. Katie is the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles with 429 points for the regular season, a 14.3 per game average. Elliott also leads the team in the rebound category with 7.87 rebounds per game. Elliott ranks in the top 10 in the SAC in four categories: 7th in scoring, 9th in 3-point field goal percentage, 4th in rebounds, and 6th in blocked shots. Following the announcement by the conference office, Coach Jeff Soderquist commented on the honors McCormick and Elliott received. “I am very proud of both Kendra and Katie. As a freshman, Kendra has shown outstanding versatility as a starter and adjusting to the pressures of collegiate basketball. This honor is a great acknowledgment of her accomplishments and indicates the type of player Kendra has been. Katie has had a great year as well as career at JBU. She has been an anchor, a real workhorse for our team this year. Both these athletes are well-deserving of the awards from the Sooner Athletic Conference.” John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of more than 1,700 students from 42 states and 45 countries.
