Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 3, 2009) - The JBU men’s soccer team didn’t allow a shaky start to rattle them as they rallied to pick up an important first win in conference play on Homecoming Saturday. With the win, the men improve to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the SAC.

JBU got on the board first in the 17th minute after an own goal gave them the one-point advantage. But SGU (3-6, 0-2) wasn’t fazed and responded with an equalizer in the 29th after Thomas McNamara connected with Alex Guerrero at the twenty.

SGU wasn’t done for the half and took the lead in the 38th when Igor Manfro took advantage of a lapse in JBU’s defense for the unassisted goal.

After falling behind 2-1 at half, the Golden Eagles came out fired up in the second period.

Cristobal Duran tied things up after breaking down several defenders before getting enough room to blast a shot by SGU’s Tyler Wythe. JBU continued to control time of possession and bombarded Wythe with several other attempts that were off mark. But in the 75th, Juan Iraola took a service from the defense and slotted a ball to Justin Thompson. Thompson was able to beat his defender and force the keeper out before lofting a soft touch over his head for the easy game winner.

“It felt good to get that goal with my family high school coach here watching,” said Thompson. “But it felt even better to get the win.”

This was Thompson’s first goal of the year.

For the game, JBU had 17 shots to seven from SGU with five shots on goal. Ryan Helmer turned away two from SGU.

Up next, JBU will travel to Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Thursday evening for a 5:30 bout before heading to Oklahoma City on Saturday for the 3 p.m. kickoff.
