Oklahoma City (January 16, 2009) - The JBU men’s and women’s basketball teams both added a notch to the win column on Thursday night after defeating Mid America Christian (Okla.) in conference play. The women won 68-56 in the early matchup, and the men took down the Evangels 67-64 in the night cap.

In ladies action, Chelsea Garrison paced JBU (10-7, 4-5) with 18 points and eight boards, followed by Ashley Taylor with 17 and nine. Sophomore Katie Mangels also provided a spark off the bench totaling 14 points and six rebounds.

After holding a 33-30 lead at halftime, the women continued to pull away in the second half increasing the lead by as many as 13 en route to the 12-point win.

Overall, JBU shot 26-of-48 (54.2%) including 5-of-10 (50%) from downtown. The Lady Golden Eagles also controlled the boards winning 44-22 over MACU (6-10, 1-6).

MACU, who was led by Michelle Hardiman’s 12 points, only managed to hit 20-of-58 (35.5%) for the game.

In the late game, four JBU players finished in double digits led by junior Davaughn Jackson with 12 points and four boards. Senior Jarrett McGriff and sophomore Andrius Mikutis both finished with 11 points and eight and five boards respectively, and senior Wes Brown added 10.

After falling behind by 11, 25-36, at the midway point, the Golden Eagles (12-5, 5-4) opened the second half on a 16-4 run to take their first lead of the game, 41-40, since the ten minute mark in the first half.

Later in the half, JBU held onto a one point lead before senior Cody Page hit a huge trey to give the Golden Eagles a four point cushion with under 2:30 remaining. Page finished with seven on the night.

Both teams traded baskets down the stretch until MACU was forced to send JBU to the line where they finished a perfect 11-of-11 in the second half and 23-of-26 (88.5%) for the game.

On the night, JBU went 20-of-47 (42.6%) from the floor while MACU (1-14, 0-8) went 26-of-72 (36.1%). JBU out-rebounded MACU 29-24 but only forced 19 turnovers while committing 23.

Up next, both JBU teams return to action at home on Saturday when they take on Oklahoma City. The women will face the NAIA’s 3rd ranked Lady Stars at 6 p.m. while the men take on the No. 21 Stars at 8 p.m.
