JBU Welcomes Works of World Renowned Photographer

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 12, 2009) - John Brown University will welcome the works of International Photography Hall of Fame photographer Peter Dombrovskis to the JBU Art Gallery. The exhibit will open with a reception on Tuesday, Jan. 20 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. and will run through Friday, Feb. 13. The work of Dombrovskis, a nature photographer in Australia, is represented in the collections of the National Library, National Gallery of Australia, Australian Heritage Commission, National Gallery of Victoria, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, the Wilderness Gallery and many private collections. Dombrovskis was born in 1945, in a World War II refugee camp in Wiesbaden, Germany, to Latvian parents. In 1950, he immigrated to Australia with his mother Adele, and they settled in Fern Tree, Tasmania. It was there that his great love for nature began. Armed with a camera, which was a gift from his mother, and his love for nature, Dombrovskis began to pursue a life and career in photography. His photography was strongly influenced by Lithuanian-Australian pioneer, conservationist and photographer Olegas Truchanas, and by landscape photographers of mid-century America such as Ansel Adams, Edward and Brett Weston and Eliot Porter. Dombrovskis professional career included many self-published works including books, diaries, calendars, posters and cards. Some of his photographs have also been instrumental in the conservation of various other Tasmanian wild places. On March 28, 1996, Dombrovskis died of a severe heart attack while photographing the Western Arthur Range in Tasmania’s remote southwest. In 2003 Dombrovskis was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame. Thanks to the International Photography Hall of Fame the JBU Art Gallery will host 39 of Dombrovskis photos as well as his inductee plaque for the International Photography Hall of Fame. The JBU Art Gallery is located in JBU’s art building on the main campus in Siloam Springs. Normal gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoon from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. For additional information or to set up a special showing for your organization, contact JBU’s Department of Visual Arts at (479) 238-8561.
