Basketball picks up pair on the road

Shawnee, Okla. (January 10, 2009) - Both the JBU men’s and women’s basketball teams picked up road wins on Saturday night after defeating St. Gregory’s (Okla.) in conference play. The women won 56-48 in the early matchup, and the men took down the Cavs 82-78 in an overtime win.

In ladies action, Ashley Taylor (Bergman, Ark.) led the way with 21 points and 12 boards followed by Micaela Cully (Mountain Home, Ark.) with 17 points and seven caroms.

The women held on to a two-point 23-21 lead before intermission and continued to build on that lead during the second half en route to the eight point win.

Overall, JBU (9-7, 3-5) shot 16-of-35 (35.5%) for the game. The Lady Golden Eagles also controlled the boards winning 45-38 over SGU (1-14, 0-7).

SGU, who was led by Abby Wolf’s 11 points, only managed to hit 14-of-60 (23.3%) for the game.

In the late game, junior Davaughn Jackson (Nassau, Bahamas) tallied 22 points and tied a career high with 16 boards to lead the Golden Eagles in the overtime victory. Freshman point guard Abel Galliguez (Sugarland, Texas) added 19 points after going 4-of-7 from downtown.

Jade Carter posted a team high 21 points for the Cavs.

In the overtime period, JBU (11-5, 4-4) managed to outscore SGU (1-15, 0-7) 15-11 in the extra period to take home the conference win.

For the game, JBU went 23-of-61 (37.7%) while SGU went 26-of-72 (36.1%). JBU out-rebounded SGU 50-47 and also forced 16 turnovers while only committing 11.

Up next, both teams return to action on the road when they take on conference opponent Mid-America Christian (Okla.) on Thursday in Oklahoma City. Women play at 6 p.m. and the men begin at 8 p.m.
