Golden Eagles Shutdown Chaps

Siloam Springs, Ark. (December 6, 2008) - Freshman Abel Galliguez (Sugarland, Texas) had a career night for JBU after scoring 28 points to lead the Golden Eagles pass Lubbock Christian (Texas), 81-64, on Saturday afternoon at home in Murray Sells Gymnasium.

Galliguez went 9-13 from the floor, including 4-7 from long distance, and was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. Andrius Mikutis (Silale, Lithuania) also had a big night for JBU (9-2, 2-1), contributing 18 points and grabbing seven caroms. Meanwhile JBU’s leading scorer, Davaughn Jackson (Nassau, Bahamas) managed to pitch in with 14 points after battling foul trouble for most of the afternoon.

The Golden Eagles held the Sooner Athletic Conference’s leading scorer, LCU’s Kenny Hewitt (24.4 ppg), to 11 points on the day.

Things got off to a slow start in the first half for both teams, but Galliguez drained a three at the 12:42 mark to get things rolling for JBU and give his team a 12-6 lead. Later in the half, Douglas Williams would help LCU come within three points, 16-13, by converting a three point play after getting fouled on a breakaway with 8:46 left in the half.

At 2:20, JBU took their largest lead of the half at 28-18. That’s when Carlos Rodriguez buried back-to-back-to-back three bombs just before the half to help LCU pull within six, 27-32, before the intermission.

JBU got off to a hot start in the second period catapulted by a layup from Jackson and deep three from Galliguez to open the half. At the midway point, JBU saw their lead climb to 14 points, 52-38, after Mikutis buried his only three on the night with 11:16 left.

On the next few possessions, LCU made a small run after Hewitt converted two free-throws and Jacob Klockenga completed a three point play to cut the deficit to nine, 43-52, with 10:29 left.

After that, the Golden Eagles regrouped going on a 12-4 run consisting of a three point play by Mikutis, consecutive buckets by Galliguez, another layup from Mikutis, a hook shot from Wes Brown (San Antonio), and made freethrow from Jarrett McGriff (San Antonio) to cap of the run and push the JBU lead to 17, 64-47 with 5:32 left.

With 2:25 left Al Duvall drained a three pulling LCU within 12, 59-71. But that’s as close as it would get as JBU held on down the stretch.

Overall, JBU finished shooting 59.6 percent (28-27) for the game. JBU also outrebounded LCU, 41-25, with McGriff leading the way with nine. He also added seven points while guarding Hewitt for most of the night.

For LCU, Tommy Lane led the way with 16 points and five boards. LCU finished the day shooting 35.5 percent (22-62).

The Golden Eagles take the week off and return to play at home next week against Rogers State (Okla.) at 3 p.m. In their first matchup this year, RSU snuck by JBU 71-69 handing JBU their first conference loss.
