JBU Names Walters Distinguished Professor

Siloam Springs, Ark (December 19, 2000) - Dr. Jim Walters, chair of the division of biblical studies at John Brown University, received one of JBU's highest honors when he recently was named Distinguished Professor. Only one other faculty member in the University¹s 81-year history has received this recognition.

According to Mel Fratzke, JBU provost and dean of faculty, "Many institutions hand this recognition out on a regular basis. But here, the award is extremely special anything but routine. Jim Walters has, in every way, distinguished himself and is worthy of this title."

While any member of the faculty or staff can nominate a professor for this award, a review committee makes the final decision based on the nominee having met a set of demanding criteria. Nominees are evaluated based on their exemplary performance in both teaching and service, distinction in their field of study, personal commitment to the overall mission of John Brown University, and a minimum of six years of teaching.

Dr. Walters began teaching at JBU in September 1969. He has served as division chair of biblical studies for the past 14 years, and under his leadership the number of majors and students has significantly increased. Walters has been instrumental in expanding degree programs to include family studies and youth ministry.

Well-liked and respected by his students, Walters is known as both a challenging professor and a jokester. A coworker at the University says of Dr. Walters, "He is a world-class theologian who short-sheeted our bed." In addition to his course load, Walters counsels with many of his students. Mel Fratzke says, "Jim¹s concern for his students is remarkable. Over the years, he has been a mentor to so many young men and women, and his premarital counseling has helped prepare hundreds of couples for marriage."

"Inspiring" is the word fellow faculty members and former students use to describe Dr. Walters. His passion for teaching, love for students and life of service have earned him the Distinguished Professor recognition, one of JBU¹s highest honors.

John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of over 1,500 students from 46 states and 30 countries. JBU is a member of the Arkansas Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
