Men Fall to No. 21 Benedictine

Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 30, 2008) - John Brown University men’s soccer opened the year on a rainy Saturday afternoon facing No. 21 Benedictine (Kan.). After a tough contest and a rain delay, the Golden Eagles were unable to notch their first win of the season falling 3-1.

Keith Parker struck first for Benedictine (1-0) scoring the lone first half goal in the 12th minute unassisted.

Two minutes into the second half, the showers came down and forced a 45-minute rain delay.

After play resumed, JBU looked to capitalize on the prolonged intermission and scored the equalizer after Adrian Jasso blasted in the rebound off of a miss from Gabriel Duarte in the 61st minute.

However, just a few minutes later, JBU allowed Benedictine to regain the lead after Sean Lewis found the back of the net during a scramble in the box.

JBU tried to tie things up late in the game, but once again Parker struck and sealed the deal in the 89th minute after crushing a shot through the defense for the 3-1 cushion.

With the season just getting underway, head coach Bob Gustavson feels that his team showed a few positives although they couldn’t come away with the win.

“We crawled back in the game,” said Gustavson. “But we lost our concentration after we showed some determination to get back in it.”

John Brown will have the chance to shake of the loss when they return to action on the road Tuesday against NCAA Division II foe Missouri Southern at 5 p.m.
