JBU SIFE Team Excels at National Competition

Siloam Springs, Ark. (May 20, 2008) - John Brown University’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team placed in the top eight at the National USA SIFE Exposition held May 13-15 in Chicago, IL. JBU’s team finished the tournament as the first runner-up in the semi-final round, being narrowly defeated by the University of Arizona, which went on to win the national title. Being named first runner-up placed JBU’s SIFE team in a four-way tie for 5th place in the nation. “In my opinion, our students were flawless in their presentation,” said Joe Walenciak, JBU business professor and SIFE advisor. “They put so much time, energy, and passion into their work and it showed in how well they did. To know that the team that beat us went on to win the national title just confirms how close we were to winning. We may not have the big trophy, but it is great to know that JBU is standing toe to toe with the big guys.” JBU SIFE was also named a National Finalist in three of the special topic competition categories: Market Economics, Ethics, and Sustainability. Being selected as a National Finalist for the special projects placed JBU in the top 20 in the country for each category. “I am proud of the accomplishments of this team,” said Walenciak. “They have worked hard, and they have changed the lives of people in amazing ways, from young people in NW Arkansas to garbage collectors in Nicaragua and Guatemala. I am amazed at how they have grown as human beings through this process.” SIFE is an international organization that mobilizes university students around the world to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. SIFE has active clubs more than 1,500 college and university campuses. Over 38,000 students are involved in those clubs and represent more than 47 countries.
