JBU Women Defeat MACU; Men Lose Thriller

Oklahoma City, Okla. (January 24, 2008) - John Brown women’s basketball picked up a win in conference play on Thursday night after defeating Mid-America Christian (Okla.) 49-46 on the road.

JBU (7-11, 2-8), who swept the series with MACU, snapped a six-game losing streak with the win.

Freshman forward Ashley Taylor led her squad with 15 points and five boards. She was the only Lady Golden Eagle to reach double figures.

JBU led by as many as twelve points in the second half, but MACU (4-14, 1-9) was able to cut the deficit to 49-46 with 12 seconds remaining in the game. MACU missed several opportunities to tie in the closing seconds as JBU held on for the win as time expired.

April Hale picked up 12 points for Mid-America Christian.

JBU returns home this upcoming Saturday when they look to face No. 12 Oklahoma City at 6 p.m. in Murray Sells.

In the late contest, John Brown welcomed back leading scorer Cody Page and starting point guard James Manthe, who have both been sidelined with injuries. Mid-America Christian, however, didn’t take notice as they fought their way to a 72-70 win over JBU on Thursday night.

JBU (9-9, 2-8) held a 70-68 lead with 1:06 remaining in the game, but MACU (8-10, 4-6) had several key stops down the stretch and was able to convert baskets to take the two-point win.

Senior post Joel Tesis, who had a game and career high 34 points, ignited a Golden Eagle comeback in the second half as JBU found themselves down 40-29 at the intermission.

With 3:38 left in the game, Tesis stuck a put back to knot things up at 64-64, and two possessions later, sophomore James Manthe gave JBU their first lead of the game at 68-64 after draining two freethrows.

MACU rallied in the closing minutes and ended the game on an 8-2 run to take the win.

Cody Page, playing in his first game since Dec. 6 versus Rogers State (Okla.) was held to only three points on 1-of-10 shooting.

Leading scorer for MACU was forward Joe Brown with 21 points.

After being on the road for the past four games, JBU returns home to face No. 13 Oklahoma City on Saturday at 8 p.m. in Murray Sells.
