KLRC Prepares with Installation of a Generator

Siloam Springs, Ark. (December 19, 2007) - As winter weather takes aim at Northwest Ark., local radio station 101.1 FM KLRC has prepared to keep people informed by installing a generator. The Guardian Elite 45,000 watt generator will fully power the studio facilities during a power outage. The natural gas model design will ensure that the station can run indefinitely on generator power without having to keep refilling a diesel fuel tank. “We have always had a strong commitment to covering severe weather outbreaks,” said Sean Sawatzky, general manager at KLRC. “Almost 60,000 people each week depend on KLRC. We know that during power outages and severe weather, they depend on us even more. During severe weather events, we're here to let listeners know about school, church, and business closings and when to take shelter and how to stay safe. We've been very fortunate in the past to have been able to offer this service without losing power. However, by purchasing the generator, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that we're always there for Northwest Arkansas families, especially when they need us most.” The generator was purchased from Electric by Miller Generator Sales and Service in Grove, OK. The approximate cost for the generator and installation was $17,000. The cost was covered by emergency savings that were made possible by listener donations. “The generator is designed to turn on approximately ten seconds after losing AC power, said Charlie Smith, station technician. “Thanks to uninterruptible power supplies that we have installed on key computers, the station will continue to broadcast during the transition to generator power.” 101.1 FM KLRC is a non-profit, listener-supported, radio station located in Siloam Springs, Ark. KLRC broadcasts in Northwest Ark. at 101.1 FM, 99.1 FM in Bentonville and worldwide at www.KLRC.com. KLRC is a ministry of John Brown University.
