JBU Men’s Soccer Captures NAIA Region VI Championship

Siloam Springs, Ark (November 17, 2002) - John Brown University, just a week after winning the SAC tournament, defeated Oklahoma City University 2-0 and Northwood University 3-2 to win the NAIA Region VI championship this past weekend in Oklahoma City. As a result of this championship, the Golden Eagles have qualified for the NAIA National Tournament to be held November 21-25 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. JBU will face Auburn University-Montgomery, the number 1 seed in the tournament on Thursday November 21 at 12:00 noon. JBU enters the national tournament as the number 16 seed. This is the Golden Eagles third trip to the NAIA National Tournament.

In the Region VI tournament, Coach Gustavson stated, “we played much better on Friday against Oklahoma City than we did on Saturday against Northwood. We seemed to be mentally drained and it was hard to come back after the tough game on Friday. Defeating Oklahoma City for the third time this year was very difficult and I was extremely proud of the way our team stuck to the game plan.” Gustavson continued, “ On Saturday against Northwood, we knew that if we could keep it close we would have a chance for the victory. As it turned out, the game ended in a 0-0 tie and after two overtimes still tied at 0-0, we had to go into a penalty kick shootout. Shane Mark, Paul Barker, and Federico Suarez scored our three goals in the shootout and Pablo Fernandez had a tremendous save to preserve the victory.” The Golden Eagles had entered the Region tournament as the number 4 seed. “It was good to see our team develop and mature as the season progressed,” commented Gustavson. “To do well at the end of the season was very satisfying and I am proud of the way the team stayed together during the middle of the year when wins were hard to come by,”

Coach Gustavson stated.
