JBU Announces John V. Carmack Scholarship for M.S. in Marriage & Family Therapy

SILOAM SPRINGS, Arkansas (June 20, 2017) – John Brown University recently announced the creation of a new scholarship award in honor of Professor Emeritus Dr. John V. Carmack. Recipients of the Carmack Scholarship are awarded $6,500 per year for three consecutive years, a total of $19,500.

Carmack served as director of JBU’s graduate counseling programs from 2001 to 2017. During his 20 years at JBU, he established the master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.

“Dr. Carmack was instrumental in creating counseling programs that are known for their professional preparation of clinicians, academic quality and the integration of Christian values and ministry in the practice of counseling,” Dr. Richard Ellis, dean of JBU’s Graduate School, said. “Drawing on his background in Christian ministry, Dr. Carmack approached the field of counseling and teaching with a pastor’s heart.”

Under Carmack’s leadership, JBU’s graduate counseling program increased in enrollment and is now the largest in the state, with more than 350 students attending on JBU campuses in Siloam Springs, Rogers, Little Rock, and Fort Smith.

“This scholarship is yet another example of Dr. Carmack’s impact on JBU and our graduate counseling programs,” Dr. Ed Ericson, vice president of academic affairs, said. “Along with thriving programs, the Carmack Scholarship will ensure that his legacy will continue to impact our students beyond his tenure at JBU.”

Application deadline for fall 2017 is June 30. Additional information about JBU’s graduate counseling programs may be found at jbu.edu/grad.
