JBU SIFE To Present at International Trade Council

Siloam Springs, Ark (October 30, 2002) - The John Brown University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will present the program at the Nov. 7 meeting of the International Trade Council (ITC) of Northwest Arkansas. The meeting will take place on Thursday, Nov. 7 from 5:30-7:30 at the Jones Center for Families in Springdale, room 226. The event is open to the public and admission is $5 per person. The program, titled “Doing Business in Central America: Avoiding the ‘Ugly’ American,” will offer insights into culturally sensitive business practices, including greetings, negotiation styles, laws of corruption, and other practical tips about doing business in Central America. A team of 10 Central American JBU students will present the program to business leaders from northwest Arkansas. “JBU’s international students are a tremendous asset and resource for business leaders who need to have a deeper understanding of the intercultural complexities of doing business abroad,” said Dr. Joe Walenciak, JBU professor of business and SIFE sponsor. “Far too often, business ventures fail unnecessarily, and this is commonly due to a lack of understanding of the ‘softer’ issues involved: culture, customs and language. We hope to be a part of the process of equipping and preparing the businesses of northwest Arkansas for success in this important aspect of international business.” The Nov. 7 ITC meeting will be the first ITC program to focus on the cultural aspects of international business instead of technical and logistical aspects of international business. The International Trade Council of Northwest Arkansas seeks to promote international trade to the businesses of northwest Arkansas. John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of more than 1,700 students from 42 states and 45 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
