Men Finish SAC Season With Fifth Straight Victory

ALVA, OK (February 26, 2005) - The John Brown University Golden Eagles won their fifth straight game, with a 52-44 victory over 15th ranked Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 19-10 overall and 10-8 in SAC play.

The victory catapulted the Golden Eagles into a three-way tie for 3rd in the Sooner Athletic Conference. More importantly it greatly improves the chances that JBU will get a third consecutive bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City in mid March.

The game was close from wire to wire, with neither team leading by more then 6 until the final play. The Rangers came into the game on a 3 game slide in desperate need of a victory to help keep their National Tournament hope alive.

The Rangers were within 4 with: 35 seconds left but a single free throw each for Brandon Cole and Alex Terry put the Golden Eagles up by 6. Freshman Steve Briggs sunk two free throws with one second remaining to clinch the JBU victory.

"These are the number one and two defensive teams in the conference, that's why we had the low score and shooting percentage," said coach John Sheehy.

Adam Workman led the Golden Eagles and all scorers with 15 points off the bench. JBU Leading scorer Brandon Cole had 14 for the Golden Eagles and Freshman Steve Briggs had 9. Cole also led the team with 13 rebounds.

The Rangers shot just 32% for the game and were just 3 of 18 from beyond the arc. Guard Henry Morris was the only Ranger in double figures with 11 off the bench and leading scorer LeRon Bradley was held scoreless.

Due to tiebreakers the Golden Eagles finished 3rd in the SAC tying the best ever finish by a John Brown squad. The Golden Eagles will open play on Thursday in the SAC tournament at 8 p.m against Oklahoma Baptist University.
